October 21st in Cappadocia
We rented a car - small Fiat with a
diesel engine - from "The Hitchhiker" [they rent cars, 4 wheel drive
and regular; mountain bikes; and small ATVs] so that we could visit Kapuzbashi,
an interesting geological phenomenon where seven waterfalls spurt
right out from the solid-rock cliff face.
We intended to visit Urgup
on our way there and if possible on our way back; we also wanted to
visit Mustafapasa
and see the Old Greek House. Mustafapasa was once a Christian (Greek
Orthodox) village - just like Guzelyurt that we visited the day before
- in the
population exchange of 1923 Mustafapasa and other villages became
Muslim. The Old Greek House is exactly that, a well preserved house
from that period.
Another place we visited on our way was the Sultan Marshes (Sultan
Sazligi) hoping to spot
Flamingos there; what we didn't know was that this ecosystem of
lakes and marshes has almost completely dried up - again Faruk said
that one of his guests had already informed him that the wetlands had
dried up and that there are no birds left; we saw this for ourselves
when we visited one of the old observation points at
Ovaçiftlikkoy, the bird watching center was closed, the
observation tower was broken down. I have since found out why - check
for yourself.
We continued through Yahyali,
but did not stop there since we were running out of time, but continued
till Kapuzbashi. The return trip was much faster (better roads) and we
managed to revisit Urgup at sunset and be at the Temenni Hill (Wishing
Hill) before returning to Goreme and dinner at Nazar Borek Gozleme

The three sisters - famous group of fairy chimneys in Urgup - shows how
the Chimneys were created, the small Basalt rock protecting the softer
Tufa below from erosion, while its surroundings are eroded
